The Maplewood Gardening Team was established in the early 2000’s as a way to beautify the Maplewood Dewey Avenue neighborhood. Today the Maplewood Gardening Team takes care of the gardens at Dewey/Flower City, Electric Ave., and the new Gateway Garden at the corner of Driving Park/Dewey Avenue.

Flower City Garden
he Flower City Garden is the Team’s main garden. It won the Flower City Looking Good Contest for Best Community Garden in 2013. The first section on the corner of Dewey Ave. was started 2006, and in 2009 the second section directly behind it was added. The goal was to have a beautiful, colorful garden visible to the vehicle and pedestrian traffic year round. We have been able to maintain the garden with new annuals and bulbs, thanks to the City of Rochester yearly flower distribution.
Gateway Garden (corner of Dewey Ave and Driving Park)
This garden was established in 2017 during the Dewey Avenue Reconstruction. The Garden Team manages the two garden plots nearest Dewey; the Team does NOT maintain the rose beds. This garden is mostly a pollinator garden with coneflowers, lavendar, and black-eye susans.
Electric Garden
Electric Garden- a small raised garden bed at the corner of Dewey/Electric Ave. in front of 2 storefronts that has mainly perennials.
The Gardening Team is always looking for new members, no garden experience necessary. During the gardening season, team members meet Saturday mornings at 9:30 am to work on the FCG, and various other times at the other locations. We have access to a water supply at Gateway Garden.
These gardens enhance the beauty a neighborhood that borders the Genesee River Gorge and is known for the Olmsted-designed Maplewood Park and majestic Maplewood Rose Garden. The Maplewood Gardening Team continues to honor the tradition of Rochester’s history as the “Flower City” and the motto of the Maplewood Neighborhood: “Community is our Nature”.
